Microsoft's decision to cease updates for Windows 10 in mid-October has sparked widespread criticism from consumer associations and considerable apprehension among users who fear being forced to replace their computers. •  operating system in 2015. Microsoft had been regularly issuing these updates
•  to enhance system security, "as it became vulnerable to numerous
•  cyberattacks," explained Martin Kramer, a cybersecurity awareness specialist
•  at the American company KnowBe4.

### What About the Users?

 

Microsofthas advised users, in a note published on its website, to transition to Windows 11, which has been available since 2021. However, the problem is that some computers are not compatible with Windows 11. For this segment, Microsoft offers the option of subscribing to an extended updates package for $30 annually, a move that has drawn the ire of consumer protection associations.

3.  rendering them potentially obsolete just three years after purchase.

 

In France, a coalition of 22 associations, including "UFC-Que Choisir" and "Halte à l'Obsolescence Programmée," launched a petition demanding that Microsoft extend the free update period until 2030. Microsoft declined to comment to Agence France-Presse regarding the number of affected users.

 

However,according to Consumer Reports, approximately 650 million people worldwide were using Windows 10 as of last August. The American Public Interest Research Group estimated that around 400 million devices are incompatible with Windows 11.
